James Cope Sentenced for Indecent Liberties with Minors
He will serve a minimum of 32 months in NC prisons
ASHEVILLE NC, February 4, 2025 – James Randel Cope was sentenced to a minimum of 32 months in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction after being convicted on two counts of indecent liberties with a minor. The Honorable Judge Alan Thornburg presided over the case in Buncombe County Superior Court.
Cope received two consecutive sentences of 16-29 months for each count, for a total minimum active sentence of 32 months. Upon his release, Cope will be required to register as a sex offender for 30 years and is subject to a permanent no-contact order with the victims.
The charges stemmed from an investigation conducted by the Black Mountain Police Department.
Both victims in this case were consulted regarding the plea agreement. One minor victim elected to appear in court, make a statement, and express approval of the agreed-upon disposition.
“The District Attorney’s Office is committed to protecting the children of Buncombe County,” said District Attorney Todd Williams. “We appreciate the diligent work of the Black Mountain Police Department in this case and the courage of the victims who came forward.”
